There are so many headlines about the impact of alternative capital on middle-market
lending that one might expect a gathering of bank-led ABL to be a very glum affair.
Some of the capital requirements of Basel II and III may cause asset classes to migrate
risk from banks to alternative capital sources, which usually require a somewhat higher
reward for their exposure. Yet the headlines that compete for our attention also herald
new ABL groups at institutions like Sterling National Bank and Blue Hills Bank.
